ANSPs launch GAIN data tool to cut aviation emissions

Analytics platform to help reduce environmental impact of aviation

NATS has launched a collaborative data analytics tool designed to help air navigation service providers identify and reduce flight inefficiencies.

The Green Aviation Insights (GAIN) platform was developed in partnership with air navigation service providers (ANSPs) from Malaysia, Belgium and Azerbaijan. The tool allows ANSPs to measure airspace efficiency using standardized metrics and benchmark performance against global counterparts.

GAIN equips air traffic management organizations with analytics to identify inefficiency trends and set actionable targets. The dashboard provides role-specific insights tailored to different users within each ANSP.

The founding members include NATS (UK), CAAM (Malaysia), skeyes (Belgium), and AZANS (Azerbaijan), with CANSO participating as an observer. These organizations collectively manage approximately 10% of global daily air traffic.

Initial projections suggest the founding members could achieve annual CO2 savings of up to 370,000 tonnes through insights provided by the platform.

"At any point in time, almost every single flight in the sky is under the watch of an ANSP, which places each of us in a position to help each aircraft fly its most efficient and environmentally friendly route," said Martin Rolfe, CEO of NATS. "ANSPs all face similar challenges in delivering such efficient routings, and GAIN will help make more of an impact than us working in isolation."

Norazman Bin Mahmud, CEO of CAAM, said: "Joining the GAIN initiative allows us to actively contribute to the development of a valuable tool that will benefit ANSPs worldwide."

Johan Decuyper, CEO of skeyes, described GAIN as "a new tool and key enabler for future environmental improvements, optimising our contribution to a greener and more sustainable aviation."

Farhan Guliyev, director of Azeraeronavigation Air Traffic Department of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC, said: "GAIN represents a transformative opportunity for ANSPs to collaborate globally. Through shared insights and real-time analytics, GAIN fosters a community dedicated to reducing emissions and improving airspace efficiency."

The GAIN initiative will offer webinars and shared resources later this year, with the tool becoming available to additional ANSPs from 2026.
